Imagined community

nacionalismoBy imagined communities, we mean those communities whose members don’t know each other; therefore, they can only “imagine” other members as representatives of an ideal, a social situation, a geographic location, or physical, cultural or statistical common characteristics or group of characteristics.

The term was coined by Benedict Anderson in his book “Imagined Communities,” in which he studyed national identity as a kind of Aristotelian fraternity opposed to real community.
